More than 100 protesters used vehicles and bamboo structures to block roads outside the Newsprinters printing works at Broxbourne, in Hertfordshire, and Knowsley, near Liverpool, on Friday evening.

Archant has said the “majority” of staff based at Thorpe, which has been operational since 1996, will be transferred to Newsprinters, Menzies or Smiths News, but has envisaged there may be redundancies.

From 2008, the Telegraph has been printed at the Newsprinters huge site at Knowsley.
