Demetrios Nicolaides, Alberta's minister of advanced education, has waded into the University of Lethbridge freedom of speech issue with new but unnecessary government directives, writes Rob Breakenridge.

Nicolaides fired board chair Nancy Laird and appointed Nelson, a former Progressive Conservative leadership candidate, to take her place.

According to Nicolaides's press secretary, there are 21 approved charters in Alberta.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides’ office declined to answer specific questions about the pilot project Wednesday, saying it’s still under development.

But much like the metrics he was proposing, Nicolaides was measuring the wrong thing, citing quantity as an inherent good.

Our town is trying to deal with the consequences of the pandemic and the effects on the workers, vulnerable groups and businesses of our city,” Nicolaides said.

Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said Tuesday the government wants to create a strong standard for free speech that will make it clear what is welcomed and what crosses into hate speech on campus.
