Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau sent bilateral ties into limbo in September after suggesting there was Indian involvement in the murder of Canadian citizen and Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in a Vancouver suburb.

Court filings revealed that even before Nijjar’s killing in Canada, U.S. law enforcement officials had become aware of a plot against activists who were advocating for the secession from India of the northern Punjab state, where Sikhs are a majority.

Further, they said that the Canadian officials had also warned Nijjar, but “had not told him that he was the target of an Indian government plot”.

Gurdwara members fear the shooting death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed on June 18, 2023, was a result of foreign interference.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a 45-year-old Canadian citizen who had been wanted by India for years, was gunned down outside the temple he led in the city of Surrey.

He is involved in giving inflammatory and hateful speeches through social media platforms, the statement said, adding the NIA has attached Nijjar’s property in the same village in another case.

In addition to the murder of Nijjar, The Intercept has also alleged FBI warnings to Sikhs in the U.S. as well as alleged plots by India Sikh activists in Pakistan.

India has previously denied any involvement with Mr Nijjar's murder.

Nijjar also held the position of President at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, the largest Gurdwara in Canada, situated in British Columbia.

Nijjar said that these flats would be constructed by LIT in the next three years following which possession would be given to 100-percent self-financing mode and allottees within three months.

Nijjar was also involved in training youths at a terror camp in British Columbia to carry out attacks in India, they said.

Singh says the Sikh community is still grieving Nijjar’s death and frustrated with the lack of progress in the police investigation, and the vote cancellation has “aggravated” people.

The allegations came about two months after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of having links to the murder of another Sikh separatist leader named Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The office adds it has linked Nijjar’s killing to the alleged plot against Pannun in the U.S. and alleges Gupta was also involved in communications about the the 45-year-old temple president’s death.

The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Trudeau’s allegations in September over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June in the Canadian town of Surrey.

Trudeau announced in the House of Commons last month that Canadian intelligence services are investigating "credible" information about "a potential link" between India's government and the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
