Orality

Conversely, while writing for dance/stage, I do carry tools from poetry: a certain attention to sonics, rhythm, refrain, variations… an anchorage in structure and orality, in short.

Unfortunately in spite of our own education, a culture of orality persists in our country, making the kind of structured and systematic documentation and maximizing of value of intellectual property impossible.

Both stories and information have been passed on through the tradition of orality and oral traditions survive in the form of performance poetry for example.

Simply asking native cultures to 'write down' their cultural artifacts on tangible mediums ignores their necessary orality and enforces a Western bias of the written form as more authoritative.
