The survey has since suggested the need to develop locally parameterised mathematical models that would more accurately predict the trajectory of the epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa.

Unlike simpler models which make mixing assumptions, processes internal to a cell—such as convection—that occur on scales too small to be resolved directly are parameterised at the cell level, while other functions govern the interface between cells.
