Pendulous

This year, rarely seen hybrids such as the fan favourite, protea snow leopard, as well as rare species such as the pendulous Protea sulphurea and the delicate blushing brides, Serruria florida, were included in the display.

In a dense pocket near the Biome’s Malaysian Garden stands a Jackfruit tree - proper name Artocarpus heterophyllus – bearing on its side the single giant pendulous fruit.

The female cones are pendulous, with persistent scales (unlike true firs), and are distinctive in having a long tridentine (three-pointed) bract that protrudes prominently above each scale (it resembles the back half of a mouse, with two feet and a tail).

The flowers are erect or spreading (not pendulous like those of Brugmansia), trumpet-shaped, 5–20 cm long and 4–12 cm broad at the mouth; colors vary from white to yellow, pink, and pale purple.

The mature female seed cones are pendulous, convert long, convert wide when closed, opening to a convert width.
