Energy campaigners have been warning throughout 2023 that energy debt was becoming a significant issue for consumers after several years of record breaking energy bills and inflation hitting a 41 year high.

Through the Energy Price Guarantee and Energy Bills Support Scheme the government has covered around half of a typical household energy bill this winter, saving about £1,500 by the end of June.

Martin Lewis has said energy bills are "still too expensive" as energy regulator Ofgem lowered its price cap for April, reducing the average household energy bill by £238.

The state Energy Assistance Program helps pay for energy expenses and the Weatherization Assistance Program reduces energy bills for the long term with insulation, heating systems, appliances and more.

The £400 energy bills support scheme further reduced the average bills for households, cutting it back to £2,100 a year.

Finally, energy bills will fall to their lowest for two years, cutting average annual bills by around £250.

Martin Lewis responded: "Standing charges are a £338 a year poll tax on energy bills, a moral hazard disincentivising lower users from cutting their bills.

Alethea Warrington, energy campaigner at the charity Possible, said the cheapest and quickest way to reduce people’s energy bills outside of a windfall tax would be to change the planning laws around onshore wind.

The CPS report comes as a separate study suggests household energy suppliers could collect £1.74 billion in profits over the next 12 months from customers’ energy bills.
