Podemos finally agreed to join Sumar last month, but the deal was fraught, not least because Díaz’s group refused to countenance the candidacy of Podemos’s Irene Montero.

Since the rise of Podemos and in 2015, the country has seen three general elections, none of which has given a majority to either the socialists or the conservatives.

That means that Podemos would join 14 other small leftist groups in the Sumar alliance.

While the PSOE lost 13 seats in the 12 regional assemblies contested, Unidas Podemos (UP), its minor partner in government, lost 33 regional seats.

He formed a coalition government with the leftist Podemos party but called snap elections in May 2023 after his party suffered major setbacks in regional and local elections.

Opposition figurehead Venancio Mondlane, 50, leader of the small Podemos party, called a nationwide strike from Thursday to November 7 after the ruling Frelimo party’s Daniel Chapo was declared winner of the election.

Five of them will be appointed by Podemos, including Iglesias, who will become vice-president for Social Affairs.

He and coalition ally Pablo Iglesias, the leader of left-wing Unidas Podemos, now want to roll back some of the labour reforms passed by a previous conservative government and push for tax increases on high-income earners and companies.

However, Podemos, which is part of Spain's leftist governing coalition, has said it will consider taking legal action to ensure there is a parliamentary inquiry.

Podemos leader’s statement comes after a controversial meeting between members of the coalition party and Polisario representatives.

That brought the tensions in Andalusia to breaking point: Podemos Andalusia had always opposed entering government as a subordinate to the PSOE.

These “movements of the squares” soon found political expression at a national level, via new parties like Podemos and Syriza, and in Bernie Sanders’ and Jeremy Corbyn’s political successes.

The two-hour discussion brought together representatives from Juntos Por el Peru, Vamos Peru, Partido Morado, Avanza Pais, Podemos Peru, FREPAP, and Accion Popular parties.

To avoid forcing Spaniards to return to the polls, Sanchez has been scrambling to drum up support for a proposed coalition with left-wing party Unidas Podemos.

Casado said the socialist politician has decided to move on with a “progressive coalition” with leftist Unidas Podemos.

However, the combination of the 120 seats obtained by the Socialists and the 35 of Unidas Podemos would not be enough on its own to secure a majority in the 350-seat parliament.

If Sanchez allies with Podemos, he would probably also need to cut another deal with the Catalans to secure a majority.

Inigo Errejon will contest the vote with a new list called Mas Pais, running in direct competition with his former close friend Pablo Iglesias who heads Podemos.
