Rills

Cyrus the Great's quadripartite garden plan, incorporated architectural elements, as well as planting, water rills, and shade-giving pavilions, producing the background to all later garden developments in Persia.

Flow depths in rills are typically of the order of a few centimeters (about an inch) or less and along-channel slopes may be quite steep.

Generally, where water erosion rates on disturbed upland areas are greatest, rills are active.

Specific to the Islamic gardens are the mosaics and glazed tiles used to decorate the rills and fountains that were built in these gardens.
