The main antagonist of the series and Sonic’s arch nemesis, Dr Ivo Robotnik, more widely known as Dr Eggman, is an iconic video game villain.

And this time around, the plot revolves around Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles teaming up with Dr. Robotnik to stop the powerful and mysterious new adversary, Shadow.

The film does make the good decision of sidelining most of the human characters in the film aside from Robotnik.

The real reason to give the тАЬSonicтАЭ films a chance is the bravura performance of pure clownery from Jim Carrey as Sonic foe Dr. Robotnik.

We see Carrey also playing Gerald Robotnik.

As a video game character, Robotnik was just a crux to have someone for Sonic to fight against.

In the aftermath of Robotnik's defeat, there's the brief sound of the Green Hills Zone theme.

Opposite the cozy friendship of Tom and Sonic is the absolute batshit world of Jim Carrey’s Doctor Robotnik.

Schwartz perfectly embodies the character to hilarious effect and steals the show so often that the movie suffers when he’s absent for too long, though sequences of Carrey's Robotnik offer plenty of jokes to keep the adults laughing.

Something tells us he'll be battling Robotnik alongside Sonic, however!

Sonic dispatches the mech in familiar fashion with some well-placed hits while curled into a ball, before sending Robotnik off to the mushroom planet.

The $87 million production co-stars Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik with Ben Schwartz supplying Sonic's voice.

The accompanying music video shows the rappers gaming before they get sucked into the Genesis game to help Sonic take down Robotnik.

With Robotnik defeated, the Wachowskis can finally get a little peace.

With Sonic’s world in the film appearing to be on an island and Robotnik learning inklings of the power Sonic has by himself, it would be very easy for a sequel to set up the existence of the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald.

Along with the trailer came a new theatrical poster as well as two sweet new international posters that feature the titular speedster zipping into action to save the world from the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

Jim Carrey has been cast as Dr. Eggman/Robotnik, and he will presumably serve as the primary antagonist of the film.

It featured the introductions of Sonic's siblings, Sonia the Hedgehog and Manic the Hedgehog, and Sonic's mother, Queen Aleena, who must defeat Robotnik and rule Mobius as the "Council of Four".
