But Mr Anderson said it “sends a clear message” to ScottishPower’s parent company, Spanish giant Iberdrola, about the UK’s green prospects, alongside wider plans to decarbonise the power grid.

ENW distributes electricity to almost five million people and has about 60,000km of electricity distribution networks, which will be operated by ScottishPower when the deal goes through.

In the last two years, ScottishPower has installed 3,750 heat pumps, mainly through the Energy Obligation 4 (ECO4), for the most vulnerable in society; and through the Home Energy Scotland Grant and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England and Wales.

ScottishPower is to pay out more than £1 million to customers it overcharged during the height of the energy crisis.

ScottishPower supplies energy to 4.4 million homes and businesses, builds onshore and offshore wind farms and runs vast tracts of the power grid across Scotland, and parts of England and Wales.

ScottishPower attributed the rise to an increase in wholesale energy costs, alongside costs associated with upgrading meters and delivering electricity from low-carbon sources.
