Seekamp was arrested in his newspaper office on 4 December 1854, for a series of articles that appeared in the Ballarat Times.

The "Lola Montes Polka" (composed by Albert Denning) is rumored to have been inspired by this event; however, the song was published in 1855 and the incident with Seekamp occurred months later in February 1856.
