According to preliminary data, more than 20 Shahed drones were destroyed by air defence forces in Kyiv’s airspace, the Kyiv Military Administration says.

In recent months, Russia, with Iran’s help, has Shahed-136s itself in an effort to expand its supply.

In Ukraine, the country’s Air Force command said it had destroyed 45 Iranian-made Shahed drones – 32 of them in the early hours of Sunday and 13 late on Saturday.

In an overnight attack on the southern Ukraine region of Zaporizhzhia, Shahed drones struck a residential area, injuring two women aged 72 and 74, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov.

In yet another barrage aimed at Ukrainian cities, Russia bombarded Kyiv with 62 cruise missiles and 35 Iranian-built Shahed drones on January 2. Ukrainian air defense intercepted most of the missiles and drones.

Iran has supplied Moscow with its Shahed attack drone to use on the battlefield.

Longer-range strikes, such as the Shahed kamikaze drones flown against Ukraine’s cities, are more likely to be directed by satellite data against buildings and other fixed targets and will not be affected.

Mr Zelensky continued: ‘In total, the enemy used more than 90 aerial targets against the civilian population and infrastructure: 81 Shahed, as well as cruise, ballistic and aeroballistic missiles.

Ukraine said on Saturday it had struck a storage and maintenance depot for long-range Shahed drones in Russia’s Oryol region, adding that this had “significantly reduced” Russia’s ability to launch mass drone attacks on Ukraine.
