Trump has twice ordered military action against Syrian government targets in the wake of high-profile chemical attacks, one on the northern town of Khan Sheikhoun and the other in the Damascus suburb of Douma.

Another well-known nerve agent, sarin gas, killed more than 90 people in a rebel-held area in Khan Sheikhoun, Syria, drawing international condemnation of the Bashar Assad regime.

The suspected poison gas attack Saturday on the besieged town of Douma came almost exactly a year after the U.S. missile attack prompted by the Khan Sheikhoun deaths.

Trump’s plans will be conditioned by the two important recent episodes of the use of chemical weaponry in Syria — the attacks on Eastern Goutha in August 2013 and the detonation of chemicals that killed 87 in Khan Sheikhoun in April last year.
