A surprise attack by Hamas on Israel, which combined gunmen breaching security barriers with a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza, was launched at dawn during the Jewish high holiday of Simchat Torah.

So how might we give expression to these complicated emotions this Simchat Torah?

In the Land of Israel, the celebrations of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are combined on a single day, and the names are used interchangeably.

Other ceremonies, such as a Simchat Bat (welcoming a newborn daughter), should instead be used to mark the special status of a new born daughter.

Outside Israel, the holiday is two days long; the name Shemini Atzeret is used for the first day, while the second is normally called Simchat Torah.

Reform and Reconstructionist communities generally celebrate this and most Biblical holidays for one day, even outside Israel. citation The second day observed outside Israel is called Simchat Torah (see next section).

Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are technically considered to be a separate holiday and not a part of Sukkot.

The celebration of Simchat Torah is the most distinctive feature of the holiday, but it is a later rabbinical innovation.

The festival is closed with another Shabbat-like holiday called Shemini Atzeret (two days in the diaspora, where the second day is called Simchat Torah ).

The main notable custom of this holiday is the celebration of Simchat Torah (שמחת תורה), meaning "rejoicing with the Torah ".
