CIA director William Burns met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on Tuesday in Cairo to discuss the negotiations, Mr el-Sissi’s office said.

El-Sissi said Wednesday he received a set of political, economic and social proposals from the dialogue which will be studied and implemented according to his legal power.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have been staunch backers of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi since the Muslim Brotherhood’s ouster in 2013.

Activists have criticized Western support for President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who came to power a decade ago after leading the overthrow of Egypt’s first democratically elected leader, Mohammed Morsi, who was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

But Burhan, who led a military takeover of Sudan in 2021, is a close ally of neighboring Egypt and its president, former army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

CAIRO — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on Thursday called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and reiterated their support for an independent Palestinian state.

Relations between the two countries broke down in 2013 following El-Sissi’s coup against the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood government led by Mohamed Mursi, a group Ankara had protected after Cairo designated it a terrorist organization.

El-Sissi has waged an unprecedented crackdown on dissent in recent years, arresting thousands —both secular-leaning activists and Islamist opponents — and rolling back freedoms won after the 2011 uprising.

The move against Zaki is the latest in el-Sissi’s unprecedented crackdown on opposition.

The United Arab Emirates also mourned the former president and extended condolences to Mr. el-Sissi and Mr. Mubarak’s family, the official WAM news agency reported.

Ali lives in exile in Spain and has published several videos online accusing el-Sissi and the army of corruption.

But few Egyptians expected to see President Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi, his wife and top army generals named as the alleged culprits.

El-Sissi also said a “comprehensive, political solution would be achieved in the coming months” for the conflict in Libya, which descended into chaos after the 2011 civil war that ousted and killed long-time dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

El-Sissi didn’t disclose the time of the meeting, but he will co-chair a two-day Russia-Africa summit on Oct. 23 in the coastal city of Sochi.

Militant attacks increased after el-Sissi, as defence minister, led the military’s 2013 ouster of then-President Mohammed Morsi, a Brotherhood leader, after massive protests against his rule.

On Friday night, those corruption allegations, which el-Sissi has strongly denied committing, triggered small but rare protests in Cairo and other Egyptian cities that lasted into the early morning hours of Saturday.
