Smith was married to the late Stephen E. Smith, a New York financier, and they had four children together: William Kennedy Smith, Kym Maria Smith, Stephen Edward Smith Jr., Amanda Mary Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Teichman Smith; two sons, Dennis William Smith of Millinocket, Maine, Wayne Braxton Smith of St. Georges, Bermuda; one brother, Jack Smith of Whiteville; one sister, Ruth Nance of Chadbourn; and a granddaughter.

Survivors include three sons, Joel Smith, Roger Smith (Lucy) and Joshua Smith, all of Winder; six grandchildren, Jason King, Keara, Charley, Megan and Connor Smith and Jessica Osburn; and nine great-grandchildren.
