At least 4,000 tourists were trying to leave western Maui, said Ed Sniffen of the Hawaii department of transportation.

Fielding questions from councilmembers Tuesday night, Sniffen stressed there was no intent by police to expand traffic safety cameras beyond those used in school zones.

She testified that she did not reach out to Sniffen at the time.

But InvenioLSI and state Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen disagree with that assessment.

Sniffen said there’s a goal to connect all the legacy signals to the network using cellular by the end of 2019.

The state could consider relocating the bridge further inland as the seas encroach, but that would have a huge impact on nearby homes and cost around $200 million, according to Sniffen.
