A suborbital science lab has been installed within the cabin of the SpaceShipTwo aircraft VSS Unity, which is the rocket-powered spaceplane that transports passengers for Virgin Galactic.

Virgin Galactic’s space plane, known as SpaceShipTwo, is flown by two pilots, so it has carried people to space, but it will not fly paying passengers until next year.

Once released from WhiteKnightTwo, SpaceShipTwo's rocket motor engages 'within seconds', according to Virgin Galactic.

The company is also stockpiling rocket motors, which are the only non-reusable part of SpaceShipTwo.

Virgin Galactic currently has one operational SpaceShipTwo craft, the VSS Unity, which has completed two test flights to suborbital space and more under construction.

A large print of SpaceShipTwo’s first powered flight, signed by crew members and a model of the spacecraft were presented to Ingram.

If all goes according to plan, the carrier airplane will haul the SpaceShipTwo passenger rocket plane to an altitude of about 45,000 feet (13.7 kms) and release it.

Notably, it was only this year that Virgin Galactic resumed crewed test flights with its new SpaceShipTwo aircraft.

Over the course of almost an hour, SpaceShipTwo and its White Knight Two mothership rose to a launch altitude of about 43,000 feet.

Virgin Galactic said Thursday’s test flight gathered data on SpaceShipTwo’s supersonic aerodynamics and thermal dynamics.
