Srebrenica in a sentence

A minute's silence was observed today to remember the genocide in Srebrenica in 1995.

In May, the Srebrenica Memorial Centre in the Bosnian village of Potocari opened a new facility to store the remains of victims who are still unidentified, almost three decades after the massacre of 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys.

I will leave it to experts to debate the definition of genocide in international law, but suffice it to say that many leading scholars — including experts like Yehuda Bauer — have questioned its application in the case of Srebrenica.

On 11 July 1995, forces under the command of the Bosnian-Serb general Ratko Mladić entered Srebrenica, a predominantly Muslim city in eastern Bosnia.

The leadership of BiH’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) decided to dissolve the party’s municipal organisation in the east Bosnian town of Srebrenica and expel the head of the local organisation, Bego Bektic, from the party over election fraud allegations.

MSF first began work in Srebrenica (in Bosnia and Herzegovina) as part of a UN convoy in 1993, one year after the Bosnian War had begun.

Potočari in particular was a daily target for Serb artillery and infantry because it was a sensitive point in the defence line around Srebrenica.

Srebrenica and the other UN safe areas of Žepa and Goražde were isolated pockets of Bosnian government-held territory in eastern Bosnia.
