All five members of the Surry County Board of Education left an ongoing school board meeting to pay a call on the commissioners and urge them to fund the new SROs.

If the SROs have trusting relationships with students, then they will give the officers tips about potential threats to school and student safety.

There is no mention made of SROs receiving required training in areas such as cultural competency or restorative justice practices and nothing regarding privacy of students and their records.

Commission Chairman Fred Hawkins Jr. said he’s spoken with the governor about allowing retired officers to come back as SROs and keep their pensions.

He said currently there are 31 SROs in 29 schools, leaving 50 uncovered.
