In his first local television interview since the announced sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel, the president of the United Steelworkers International Union calls the deal bad for America and bad for steelworkers.

Amongst them, some former steelworkers.

And in steelworkers’ favor, he added, though jobs in the industry may shift around geographically within the U.S. in the coming years, overall, the companies still need workers.

Casey called the sale “a bad deal for American steelworkers” late Thursday.

The employees are represented by several unions, including United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO, Locals 1277, and others.

The steelworkers union, which sought the measures Biden is adopting, endorsed him last month.

The United Steelworkers, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump oppose it, as do local members of Congress and all of their opponents.

They make up a small slice of the United Steelworkers' Canadian membership.

This was welcomed by steelworkers' representatives the Australian Workers Union, with national secretary Paul Farrow saying the projects would create hundreds of jobs, while protecting the thousands that already work in the steel and adjacent industries.
