While southern Rhône produces relatively few wines where Syrah is in the majority, the proportion of Syrah in the blended wines of this region has been on the rise.

Where does Syrah come from?

Memories of winemaker Rolando’s good-natured tío (uncle) in Mexico inspired his 2017 Sin Fronteras (“without borders”) Napa Valley red wine, which he describes as a “rich, robust” blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Syrah ($130 magnum.

The blend varies slightly from year to year, but it is around 60% Malbec with varying amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.

Unlike whites, which can assume many tints, reds are definitely red but they range from delicate shades to rich, intense purple such as the heavy-bodied wines made from Syrah, Malbec or the South African Pinotage grape.

The 2000 was the glossier, fruitier of the two, whereas the leathery scented 2001, freighted with more oak, showed desirable black olive and grilled meat flavours, which typify the Syrah variety.

The northern areas are known for varietals such as riesling while the southern, desert-like area grows heat-lovers like syrah.

In South Africa, the grape varieties grow are generally international and include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah for red wines and Chenin Blanc (or ‘Steen’), Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for whites.

I used a syrah cask, muscat and port, and all these came locally from the Balistreri winery.
