The Alberta Energy Regulator says it’s looking for an investigator to dig into releases of oilsands tailings and tailings-contaminated water that weren’t made public for nine months.

Tailings from the in Leach ("CIL") circuit will be deposited in the existing on-site paddock style tailings storage facility ("TSF") and the already permitted TSF paddocks 4 and 5 to be constructed starting in late 2021.

The ICCM is now looking at ways to require the mining industry to adopt so-called dry-stack tailings, where water is removed from the slurry before tailings are stored, thus increasing a dam’s stability.

Alberta's energy regulator is confirming that hazardous chemicals are present in a small waterbody after two releases of tailings-contaminated wastewater from Imperial Oil's Kearl oilsands mine.

Ultramafic rocks from the project (in the form of tailings and waste rock) are being assessed for their ability to capture and store carbon.

What will happen if a tailings spill occurs?

As a result of the block on the tailings dam, the company behind the project, Perth-based Regis Resources, said the mine at Blayney was no longer financially viable.
