For years, trash, vandalism and anti-Asian hate have contaminated a five-block cultural district in Vancouver that once teemed with vibrant stores and restaurants as one of Canada’s oldest Chinatowns.

However, if you listened deep enough, looked deep enough, it teemed with pearls of wisdom and rough lessons — much like an ocean floor.
