AMD has officially launched the new second-gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs which include the flagship Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX but AMD is already teasing consumers and their competitor in Intel with massive price drops to first-gen Threadripper CPUs.

Any other specifications mentioned on the internet are based on rumors for now, but according to AMD might be bringing back HEDT versions of Ryzen Threadripper with 64 PCIe Gen 5 CPU lanes and 4 channels of DDR5 support.

That means that their platform, known as WRX80, includes a chipset that expands system I/O (where EPYC typically doesn't use a chipset.) The specific platform on which these Threadripper PRO chips were tested is apparently known as Boulder Gulch.

With the new generation of semiconductors, AMD is returning to a bifurcated CPU strategy for workstation PCs that was last seen in the Threadripper 3000 series.

Rumor has it Threadripper Pro will launch next Tuesday, July 14.

This would be an upgrade over the regular versions of Threadripper, which support up to 256GB of 4-channel memory.

AMD’s Threadripper 3000 will launch in November.

And with the 64-core Threadripper 3990X on the horizon.

But memory latency concerns held even AMD’s best Threadripper CPUs back from dominating in several benchmarks and real-world situations.

It would have been interesting to see how Intel's new Cascade Lake-X CPUs perform relative to the third-gen Threadripper, since these are in direct competition, but we don't have those numbers yet.

Instead of a single chip, AMD's massive 32-core and 24-core Threadripper CPUs are built by connecting four dies using a high-speed fabric interface.

With Ryzen, Threadripper, and Core i9 CPUs though, the AMD vs. Intel argument is muddier than ever.
