Electromagnetic thrusters Pulsed inductive thrusters main Pulsed inductive thrusters (PIT) use pulses instead of continuous thrust and have the ability to run on power levels on the order of megawatts (MW).

Hall-effect thrusters are sometimes referred to as Hall thrusters or Hall-current thrusters.

Among electric thrusters, ion thrusters have received the most serious commercial and academic consideration.

At this point the main thrusters shut down and the secondary thrusters ignited, slowing the fall until the lander was 1.5 m (5 ft) above the surface, where the engine was switched off.

Interplanetary vehicles mostly use chemical rockets as well, although a few have used ion thrusters and Hall effect thrusters (two different types of electric propulsion) to great success.

It does not use ion thrusters as its primary propulsion system, but uses both colloid thrusters and FEEP for precise attitude control — the low thrusts of these propulsion devices make it possible to move the spacecraft incremental distances accurately.

This allows much smaller thrusters compared to gridded ion thrusters.

Aerojet’s Redmond team builds thrusters for a wide array of NASA spacecraft, ranging from the Artemis moon program’s Orion capsule and SLS rocket that touched down on Mars in 2021.

By all accounts, the thrusters performed just as well today.

Delivering a rover to Mars, for example, involves wrapping the rover in a heat shield, and then sealing the entire thing — rover and heat shield together, along with thrusters and other spacecraft parts — into the nosecone of a rocket for launch.

Jorns says that the cooling problem would need a space-worthy solution if Hall thrusters are to run at these high powers.

One of the most recent trials involved small-scale plasma thrusters attached to a CubeSat (miniature satellite), enabling it to power itself into Earth’s atmosphere and burn up once its mission is over.

The argon Hall thrusters were developed by SpaceX engineers, the company said, and are the first of their kind to operate in space.

There was a brief glimmer of hope earlier this month, with one of the thrusters showing some improvement.

If there were problems with the larger engines intended to be fired for a maneuver to drop the spacecraft out of orbit, one of the backup plans was to use eight of the smaller thrusters.

It seems one of the two big thrusters on Slim (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) stopped working during the descent.
