Talgo, which assembled the trains in a facility in Milwaukee’s business park, sued in 2012 as the trainsets were completed and the equipment was placed into storage for a decade.

This paves the way for upgradation of existing corridors with new higher speed trainsets, European Train Control System Level 2, signalling systems, traffic management and centralised operations.

That means a total of 13 trainsets are needed.

The trainsets will have the capacity of accommodating at least 3,000 people on a single trip, Managing Director of Alstom India and South Asia Alain Spohr said.

After two pre-production trainsets (nicknamed Patrick and Sophie) had been tested and substantially modified, the first production version was delivered on 25 April 1980.

An order for 30 trainsets, to be manufactured in France but with some British and Belgian components, was placed in December 1989.

In 2006 seven Italian tilting trainsets Pendolino ČD Class 680 entered service.

The service will use the newly bought Siemens Velaro trainsets and will also call at Brussels, Antwerp, and Rotterdam.

TriMet also has two refurbished former Alaska RR RDCs as backup trainsets for when one or more Colorado Railcar DMUs is out of service.
