Accra, March 1, GNA - Participants at a round table conference on Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) have called on government to make TVET attractive by mainstreaming technical and vocation schools under the free SHS policy.

It was on the theme “Building a Solid Foundation for TVET in Ghana” and was organised by the National TVET Advocacy Team instituted by the Vocational Training for Females (VTF).

Ahmad Zahid said these programmes were part of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry’s efforts to strengthen TVET, meet market demands and promote the growth of a skilled, competitive and high-income community.

Among them are Principal of the Year, Dwayne Mulgrave (left); TVET Teacher of the Year, Gina Mullings (second left); and Teacher of the Year, Jody Brown (third left).

An average of eight out of 10 technical vocational education and training (TVET) graduates got employed, a study conducted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) revealed.

Last year, we said that we would place over 10,000 TVET college graduates in employment.

Top honours were also bestowed upon Dwayne Mulgrave, principal of Discovery Bay High School, and Gina Mullings, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teacher at St Catherine High School.

Andrade said that the ongoing discussions within the forum would offer invaluable guidance for policymakers and other stakeholders in decision-making and strategic planning related to TVET.

Currently, seven pilot schools across the country—Bayling, Rangjung, Chumey, Punakha Central Schools, Khuruthang, Babesa Middle Secondary Schools, and Bajothang Higher Secondary School—have been offering TVET as an elective since 2020.

I do believe TVET is a key.

It was also considered prudent to mainstream a dual training system for TVET training such that training is institutional-based and work-based.

Last year, I had a rare opportunity of addressing TVET college lecturers.

Whether it's people that are connecting while they're at school through TVET (TAFE-Delivered Vocational Education and Training), through to people that are changing careers.

He said it was the responsibility of traditional rulers to strengthen advocacy on ending abuses of children, ending commercial sex exploitation, reducing gender-based violence and promoting technical, vocational and educational training (TVET).

He said it will also provide decent jobs and self-employment opportunities for young technical and vocational education and training (Tvet) graduates and entrepreneurs, particularly women.

It added that, TVET learning centers should be equipped to ensure that quality of instruction and learning outcomes were consistent with standards required by the industry.

It said TVET had the means to address the country's youth unemployment challenges which was a setback for economic prosperity, peace and security.

She said the government had begun the process to upgrade the TVET infrastructure in Ghana which includes the upgrading and retooling of all the 34 NVTIs, the NVTI head office, 10 regional offices and five apprenticeship offices.
