Warblers

This is one of the busiest times of year for palm warblers, yellow-rumped warblers, white-throated sparrows and other birds passing through Chicago on their way south for the winter.

In contrast Tennessee warblers have short, mostly square tails with no markings and American redstarts have long, square tails with orange or red tail spots very close to the body.

From microbes in the soil to the tallest trees, from the warblers to birds of prey, from the thousands of forbs that populate the grasslands to the thousands of corals that populate the ocean, every ecosystem on the planet thrives on variety.

However, in season two these performances are at their peak, and that’s all thanks to “The Warblers,” who are a rival a cappella group at an all-boy prep school led by Darren Criss’s character Blaine Anderson.

If you take a good look at birds with streaks on their breasts like yellow warblers, song sparrows or pine siskins, you will notice that within each species the pattern of streaking is a little different.

One can find kingfishers diving for food in the water, herons stalking their prey, and over 30 species of warblers singing songs in the trees.

Over 100 species are migratory breeding birds, moving from wintering areas to our south to nest here and then departing before winter sets in. Killdeer, eastern phoebes and yellow warblers fit the bill.

Some look to the sky for skeins of geese and ducks heading northward or warblers and bluebirds returning to their breeding grounds.

Black-throated Blue Warblers have shifted the timing of their spring and fall migrations over the past fifty years.

But migrating warblers are not so easy to spot and identify.

Some of the less common warblers – such as bay-breasteds and Cape Mays – appeared in good to unprecedented numbers.

They also wrote about the loss of the forest due to extractive industries, as well as the perils of the warblers’ incredible journey.

This result means that 85 percent of the annual mortality in these warblers occurred during the three months of migration.

He and Pete Gilmore teamed up on Sept. 17 to find the diminutive and hyper-active blue-gray gnatcatcher as well as the following warblers: black-throated green, black-and-white, and blackpoll.

Ingrid and Krystal spent an hour there, watching warblers and chickadees land and take off again.

It is getting late in the season for warblers, but you never know what may appear.
