Wombles

Since the Wombles of Hambleton was first established, linked groups including the Thirsk Wombles, the Wiske Wombles and Brompton Wombles have been formed to litter pick in the areas where they live.

Taking the litter issue into their own hands, the Wellie Wombles frequently head out to all corners of and beyond to keep the streets and green spaces clear of rubbish.

Wombles take to the streets to litter pick – and keep an eagle eye out for the menace of fly-tipping – and their hard work already has the backing of Lancaster City Councillor, David Whitaker, who recently joined them to collect rubbish.

Last month, Boris Johnson gave the go-ahead for a snooper army of marshals - dubbed 'Covid Wombles' - to patrol locked-down towns and cities.

Taking their name from the Wombles of Wimbledon Common they see discarded receipts in fast-food car parks as free money.

Another British favorite, The Wombles was also featured.
