Vicente Zambada Niebla – “El Vicentillo” – is the son of Guzmán’s longtime partner and co-founder of the cartel, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, and was once groomed to take over the business.

Although it's unclear why the pair landed a private jet in the West Texas city, three law enforcement officers familiar with the matter that Guzmán López may have duped Zambada into joining him on the flight.

Mexican authorities reported that they had no participation in the arrest of Ismael “Mayo” Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa cartel, and of a son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, carried out on July 25 in Texas by US authorities.

The arrest could also have political implications, some U.S. officials said, particularly if Zambada García decides to cooperate with U.S. authorities and divulge what he knows about corruption in his country.

The official did not provide additional details, including who persuaded Zambada to get on the plane or where exactly he thought he was going.

The trigger for the conflict between the two most powerful factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, a drug gang, dates back to July, when legendary trafficker and leader of one of those groupings, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, was arrested in the United States.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had been offering a reward of up to $15m (£12m) for Zambada's capture.

Zambada, 76, required the use of a wheelchair and made no other statements other than responding to Berton with "Yes," "No," or "Yes, I understand," as she questioned him, according to a transcript of the proceedings obtained by ABC News.

Zambada and Guzman Lopez are accused of leading the cartel's criminal operations, including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks.

Zambada and López, who is likely in his 30s, were detained after landing in a private plane in the El Paso area, according to two US officials.

Zambada, a powerful Mexican drug cartel leader on Thursday made his second appearance in federal court in Texas after being taken into U.S. custody last week.

Zambada faces charges in multiple locales.

Zambada Niebla was arrested by Mexican authorities in 2009 and later extradited to Chicago for trial.

Zambada was an old-fashioned capo in an era of younger kingpins known for their flamboyant lifestyles of club-hopping and brutal tactics of beheading, dismembering and even skinning their rivals.

Zambada was arrested on Thursday near El Paso, Texas, after landing in a small plane that arrived from Mexico.

Federal prosecutor Amanda Liskamm, in her rebuttal, reminded the jury that Guzmán, not Zambada, was on trial.

While Zambada-Niebla, who faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, is still awaiting sentencing.

He also attacked Zambada’s credibility by picking apart statements to the U.S. government after his 2008 capture, many of which focused on other cartel members.
