Bill Belichick has yet to publicly name Mac Jones the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback for the 2023 season, which means Bailey Zappe could have a real chance to compete for the job.

But he’s currently backing up Bailey Zappe, who is 2-2 as a starter this season.

Despite his last appearance not being all that great, Bailey Zappe proved himself to be a solid option to back Jones up.

During his first offseason conference at the NFL annual meeting, Belichick was asked whether Jones and second-year backup Bailey Zappe will be “competing for the starting job” in the coming months.

If Jones fails this time, New England probably will have its answer on whether he’s the future of the franchise, and neither Zappe nor Lance would come to the rescue.

If Mac Jones is not the future at QB for the Patriots – I guarantee it will not be Zappe.

If Zappe is the starter that’s really bad.

Just like his performance in Pittsburgh, Zappe benefitted from a solid opening script and lived on the edge with his first half against the Chiefs.

Over the last three weeks, the only quarterbacks to have a worse individual passing grade are Trevor Siemian in Week 13, Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones in Week 12, and Zach Wilson in Week 11. Trubisky is right there next to them.
