Zepbound is the latest diabetes drug approved for chronic weight management, joining Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy, a high-dose version of its diabetes treatment Ozempic.

Breakthroughs in semaglutide and tirzepatide have given rise to several glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications, including Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.

But continuing treatment indefinitely isn't viable for many, the reports, especially as insurance companies are shifting how freely they cover leading brands Wegovy, Zepbound, and Ozempic.

Eli Lilly's tirzepatide, a GLP-1 therapy sold as Mounjaro for diabetes and Zepbound for weight loss, is being evaluated in a mid-stage study of chronic kidney disease in patients with obesity.

For Zepbound, Eli Lilly said participants lost after 72 weeks on a 15-milligram dose.

In both studies, participants randomly received either 10 or 15 mg of Zepbound or placebo once weekly for 52 weeks.

The risk of death, hospitalization and other bad outcomes was 38% lower in patients given Zepbound compared to those who received a placebo, Lilly said Thursday.

While Eli Lilly is a leader in obesity medications with its injectable GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, Zepbound, the pharmaceutical giant is also in late-stage clinical testing with an oral GLP-1 drug called orforglipron.
