It’s not for no reason the Russian assault on Avdiivka, a key Ukrainian stronghold in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, seems to be stalling out.

Nor when Vladimir Putin, breaking a taboo of the post-Cold War world ‘order’ (now coming with scare quotes), annexed Crimea in 2014 and pushed his proxies into the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

Potential targets include the town of Bakhmut, an area located in the eastern Donbas region which has been at the centre of intense fighting in recent months.

Russia now controls around 18% of internationally recognised areas of Ukraine, including the Donbas & Crimea regions under Russian control since 2014.
